A brief overview of the Scout section
When the young people reach Scouts they are introduced properly to our boating side. They will have had tasters throughout the other sections but it is in Scouts where they will learn how to row, paddle or take charge of a powerboat under the watchful eye of Skip and the many other adults it takes to run the section. Scouts meet on a Friday night and the times vary from 18.30 start in the summer and 19.00 in the winter months with all meetings finishing at 21.00.
Read our blog posts for more information directly from the Scouts! (Please note this will take you to an external site)
RNLI Walmer Lifeboat Station Visit
Walmer lifeboat welcomed members of 2nd Sea Scouts on a visit to the station on Friday 13th March. Each small group was given a questionnaire to complete while the talks were taking place. Visits Officer Jenny Preston gave a talk on beach safety, FLOAT (Fight your instincts, Lean back, Open your body, extending arms and legs, Actions - gentle movements of hands and feet, Time – in 60-90 seconds you’ll be able to control your breathing), and RISE – Rescue, Influence, Supervise, Educate, the lifeguard and beach safety message.
Boat crew member Ste Withers spoke about personal protective equipment used by both boat and shore crew, lifejackets, and personal locator beacons. He also explained the difference, if they found themselves in difficulty at sea, between a Pan Pan (an urgent situation but not immediately life-threatening or a danger to the vessel) and a Mayday call, a potentially life-threatening situation.
Fellow boat crew member Ben Winslade spoke to the group about what they should take afloat with them, including a lifejacket, a means of communication with someone ashore should it be needed, what equipment would help should they go overboard, what they would need to navigate at sea including the use of charts and the flashing sequence of buoys. Crew member Luke Curry was also on hand to keep his colleagues to time!
The evening finished with a visit to the station shop and a competition using a throwbag.
